System-Level Strategies for Renewable Energy Variability Management: A Review of Grid Innovation and Energy Storage Technologies

Author(s): Sayak Sarkar and Prof. (Dr.) Jay Prakash Dubey

Abstract:

The accelerated global shift toward renewable generation has led to a substantial increase in the integration of variable resources, particularly solar and wind, within contemporary power systems. Despite their recognized environmental and economic advantages, the stochastic and intermittent nature of these sources introduces significant challenges related to grid stability, operational reliability, and system efficiency. In response, system-level methodologies that combine grid modernization with advanced energy storage technologies have gained prominence as effective mitigation mechanisms. This paper presents a conceptual review of the role of coordinated grid control, digital infrastructure, and storage-based solutions in reducing the impacts of renewable power variability. By adopting a holistic perspective that treats the power network as a dynamically coupled system rather than a collection of independent elements, these approaches enhance operational flexibility, system resilience, and long-term sustainability in renewable-intensive electricity networks.
