Abstract:
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is characterized not only by airflow limitation but also by autonomic imbalance, anxiety-related dyspnea, reduced functional endurance, and diminished quality of life. Psychophysiological mechanisms play a critical role in symptom perception and disease progression. Integrative interventions combining structured breath regulation and lifestyle-based systemic management may influence both respiratory mechanics and autonomic regulation. This study aimed to evaluate the psychophysiological and functional impact of combined Yoga-based respiratory training and Ayurvedic lifestyle intervention in patients with mild to moderate COPD. A controlled interventional study was conducted with four parallel groups: conventional treatment, Yoga-based respiratory training, Ayurvedic lifestyle intervention, and combined integrative therapy. Pulmonary function (FEV1), functional endurance (Six-Minute Walk Test), anxiety levels, and health-related quality-of-life indices were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Between-group comparisons were performed using ANOVA, and effect sizes were calculated to evaluate magnitude of change. The combined intervention group demonstrated the greatest improvement in pulmonary function and functional endurance (p < 0.01). Significant reductions in anxiety scores were observed in both Yoga and combined groups, with the largest effect size in the combined intervention arm. Lifestyle-based intervention independently improved quality-of-life scores. The interaction effect between time and intervention type was statistically significant (p < 0.05), indicating differential improvement trajectories across groups. The findings suggest that integrative therapy targeting both respiratory mechanics and systemic lifestyle regulation produces synergistic psychophysiological benefit in COPD patients. Breath-focused interventions may reduce autonomic dysregulation, while lifestyle modification enhances systemic stability. Multimodal integrative approaches may therefore represent a valuable adjunct in chronic respiratory disease management.
